this project was another attempt at establishing a brand presence and creating a product oriented towards the consumer. iteration for technical aspects of the product was needed immensely.Â
RESEARCH :: NICHES IN THE MARKET
most shelves just hold things on top. specialized shelves for tasks are much easier to be marketed
RESEARCH :: TRENDING MATERIALS
instead of wood, other materials would be more unique and provide other qualities that would be interesting to see in the form of a shelf.
IDEATION :: BRAINSTORM WHAT A NEW SHELF COULD LOOK LIKE
each of the shelves that could also do ___. drawing out what they would look like and present themselves as
IDEA :: A SHELF THAT CAN ALSO GROW PLANTS
this idea seemed very niche. full plant shelves never had space to put things on.
CONCEPTS :: HOW WOULD THIS PLANT SHELF LOOK?
needed to find a way of affixing the shelf to the wall. constant development of brackets was needed to sort out inconsistencies and issues.
bracket needed to be slim and fit with curved design. wanted the shelf to be able to slide in and out of brackets for easy change of soil.
DEVELOPMENT :: EVERYTHING COMING TOGETHER
figuring out easy manufacturing, and selecting plants that would take well for longevity.
FINAL DESIGN :: CREATION AND MAKING
multiple attempts at bending the acrylic resulted in a step-by-step system created for future manufacture.
Coco-coir and dirt were filled in the shelf and then screwed into the wall.
BRANDING :: COMPANY CREATION
once the product was created, the only thing left to do was market it. I would have to devise a company that could sell the terra shelf. They would create furniture and home products with an angle that introduces more plants into the home of the consumer.
END RESULT :: MAGAZINE PUBLICATION
